9 New Facebook Page Changes: What You Need to Know

Table of Contents

1. Navigation Has Been Relocated

The tabs at the top of your Page can now be found directly underneath your page profile picture. The text in the box that used to appear in the box underneath your page's profile picture now appears in the INFO tab.

2. Changing Your Category

One change that is HUGE is now you have an opportunity to change your Page CATEGORY. This has been something that we were unable to change out before. If, for example, you set up your page incorrectly to start with…you can now change out your category.

3. Use Facebook As Your Profile Page

You can choose your personal profile or your fan page as your primary "PAGE" on Facebook. If you choose your fan page you will be able to receive notifications from your page, view the news feed, "like" and post as your "page" and not you personally. In other words, you will be able to interact on other fan pages under the name of your fan page. However, a big distinction here, you will NOT be able to interact with personal profiles as your fan page.

4. Photos Are Now Displayed At The Top

Facebook recently changed the personal profiles to reflect a series of photos at the top of the page. This same setup has been incorporated into the new page layout. The most recent photo that you or others post on your wall or any photo your page is tagged in will appear here.

5. Wall Filters

Pages now have two visible wall filters "Posts by Everyone" and "Posts by Page". Admins will have two additional features that are nice; the ability to view "most recent" and "hidden" posts.

6. Email Notifications

You can opt to receive notifications when people post or comment on your Page. Fan Page admins can opt to receive an email alert whenever someone comments on one of their pages. Click "Edt Page"  and then "Your Settings" to change your settings.

7. Feature Other Pages and Their Admins

This is a pretty cool new upgrade. You can feature other pages that you like or their admins. If you have other fan pages and would like to build the funnel for both pages, you can link them using this feature. It will give the other page more visibility. The featured "Page Likes" and the "Admins of Pages" will appear on the left side of your page.

8. Mutual Friend Connections

When people visit your Page, they will be able to view friends who also like your Page.  They will also be able to see other Pages that they and your Page have in common.

9. Biggest Change

“On March 11, 2011, you will no longer be able to create new FBML apps and Pages will no longer be able to add the Static FBML app. While all existing apps on Pages using FBML or the Static FBML app will continue to work, we strongly recommend that these apps transition to iframes as soon as possible. Lastly, we want to be clear that our deprecation of FBML does not impact XFBML, such as the tags that support social plugins.**We will be updating this all night as new information comes in.” – Facebook

This is a substantial change for the average user. FBML has allowed those with little technical web design knowledge to brand their fan pages using online tutorials or html generators. IFrames will require a more advanced skill set. Amateurs may find that the new IFrames format is a struggle to utilize. The good news is that Facebook is going to "grandfather" in the existing FBML fan pages for the unforeseeable future. How long this will last is anyone's guess.

Conclusion

Let's look on the bright side; most of the changes are positive! Regardless of whether we like it, love it or hate it; we are all stuck with it so DIVE IN and start working the changes to your benefit.

Definitely keep going, Adeline! It will pay off and believe it or not, it does get easier the more you do the same “small” things every day! Keep the faith, my friend! If I can ever assist, please let me know.
