Facebook’s New Timeline Feature Isn’t Out Yet But You Can Set Up Yours Now!

The Facebook Timeline all the buzz right now! Whether you love the idea or hate it, if you are curious about Facebook’s newest feature, you can find out how to check out yours before anyone else. You just have to be willing to play in the Developer’s area of Facebook's site.

The instructions are easy to follow, and if you are new to the Developer’s side of Facebook, you can read through them and see if you have the “Can Do” feeling about doing this for yourself. You might, though, already have an app, especially if you integrated Facebook with your website already. Either way, follow the instructions below to play with this exciting feature before it’s released to the general public.

Facebook Timeline Steps

Step 1:

Login to Facebook and then follow this link to your Facebook Developer Page, where you will need to click to “Allow” so that the Developer page can access your basic information (if this is your first visit).

Step 2:

You will be taken to your new (or existing) Facebook Developer Page, where you will click on the “Create New App” button if you don’t already have one. If you already have an App associated with your account you can choose to create a new one or skip to Step 4 and use your already existing App (click on the “Edit Settings” link on your App page to get there).

Step 3:

A pop-up window will appear where you will name your new app. It doesn’t really matter what you name it so choose a name for the “App Display Name” box, and a lowercase name for the “App Namespace” box. Click to agree to the Privacy policy and click on the “Continue” button.

Step 4:

You have to fill out one of those lovely Captcha boxes to prove you are a human being, but then you will take to your new App Settings page. Click on the “Open Graph” tab on the menu down the left side of the screen.

Step 5:

You will be taken to the Open Graph settings page, and there should be a “Get Started with Open Graph” title. Under that section, you will need to define “one action and one object for your app.” Again, it really doesn’t matter what you enter in this since you are the only one accessing this. Fill in something spiffy for your action and something else for your object and click the “Get Started” button to continue.

Step 6:

Unless you are a developer at heart, you won’t want to make any changes at all on the page you are taken to. None of the settings need to be messed with for this to work. Just scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click on the “Save Changes and Next” button to continue.

Step 7:

You will be taken to your Open Graph settings page again, but you can go right back to your Facebook homepage and take a couple minutes to check status updates. Usually within a few minutes you can refresh your homepage screen and you will be given the opportunity to play with the Developer Release of your Timeline. Click on the awesome “Get it Now” button and you’ve got your Timeline!

A Couple of Important Tidbits…

If you are new to the Facebook Developer settings, when you begin you might need to verify your cell phone number or enter credit card information so that they can further verify your identity. Some of you might be unwilling to do this, so this information is good to know going into this process.

Also, before you publish your Timeline, which you will have the opportunity to do after you have checked it out, I strongly recommend thoroughly investigating your privacy settings. Everything you have done on Facebook since you first joined will be viewable dependant upon those settings. You might be surprised what information is actually available; some of which you may not want to be seen.

So now, it’s your turn! Did you follow the steps above and get your Timeline setup? What did you think?  I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Personal profile only at this time, Leila. I have heard that the fan pages are not going to change much.
